A career in network management consists of computer maintenance, information technology support, network administration, software installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade, and troubleshooting. System administrators may deal with network issues such as performance, reliability and security of both hardware and software.
Career progressions in networking usually start with help desk support, then computer repair and network management. Once a system administrator has gained enough experience in their field, they may decide to specialize in certain areas such as network installation, internet security, UNIX or Internet Information Services (IIS) web servers, computer maintenance and other computer management areas. Career opportunities are varied and wide-ranging in this occupation. In addition, with the experienced gain in this career, some may choose to start their own business in computer repair, internet services or other information technology related fields.
As a help-desk specialist, workers assist clients with hardware and software problems related to their computer at home or in the office. Communication is important since the technician must be able to troubleshoot problems over the phone. Most businesses choose technicians who are A+ certified. This certification proves the technician is knowledgeable in PC hardware and software services and support. CompTIA A+ is the most popular form of being certified.
After experience is gained as a help-desk specialist or computer maintenance and repair technician, the person may seek further career education to become a network management, or system administrator. Even though these occupations are interchanged by definition, the system administrator usually overseas the operational functions of a network while the network administrator will design, build and upgrade the infrastructure. In small companies, they perform both functions. Regardless of the title, there are many career paths for the administrator to choose and employment opportunities will continue to rise for some time.
To be certified in most information technology occupations, the technician must first have their A+ certification. Experience, training and education are important since most computer systems and network infrastructures are complex in nature. Another important factor to consider is what career path to follow.
