Often called the Arts capital of Virginia, the city of Norfolk proudly celebrates a vast array of cultural heritages through an exciting range of attractions, events, and shopping! From sunset cruises and festivals to theatres and churches, you’ll find culture being honored and respected.
With over 234,000 people calling Norfolk home, there are several ways to enjoy the benefits of culture. Whether it’s strolling the paths of Norfolk Botanical Gardens, observing one of 350 animals at our Virginia Zoo or hearing the Virginia Symphony, Norfolk has something for everyone to revel in.
Norfolk encompasses quite a few museums and historical landmarks. The Chrysler Museum of Art, with 5000 years of art history, features more than 30,000 original works. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum boasts 225 years of naval history through preserved artifacts. Other historical landmarks include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument and Plaza, which is a permanent homage to Dr. King and other slain civil rights leaders, and the Moses Myers House, home of one of Norfolk’s first Jewish residents.

The battleship, USS Wisconsin, in port beside The National Maritime Center – Nauticus, is the largest and last of its kind to be built by the U.S. Navy. Tours for both are available year-round.
Tourists and residents alike enjoy the numerous festivals that take place throughout the year. The India Festival, Greek Festival, Latino Festival, African-American Festival, Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival, and the Philippine Festival are just some of the cultural festivals celebrated here in Norfolk. We also have the Norfolk Jazz Festival, the Virginia Arts Festival and the SOL Film Festival as well.
There are also several diverse shopping opportunities, including the MacArthur Center, which houses 140 first-class stores and restaurants. Another regional mall is The Gallery at Military Circle, where you can enjoy over 120 specialty stores and a 200-room Doubletree Hotel. Antique shops can also be found throughout the Ghent section of Norfolk.
Norfolk is also pro-sport, with its own hockey team – The Norfolk Admirals and its own baseball team – The Norfolk Tides.
From museums and performing arts to golfing and quaint little bistros, Norfolk abounds with ways to entertain and educate. Norfolk’s public school system has been named two years in a row one of the top five urban districts in the country.
